LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.
I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. Beginning in high school I found myself driven to help children in need. Through my participation in Mercy Action, I raised money for mentally delayed children, and set up numerous barbeques for them. Later, I began tutoring a young brazilian boy in the 5th grade. He needed help with all of his studies, especially math and english. As a political science major, I have gained experienced in essay writing, grammatical skills and research methods.
Before I was able to tutor, I taught 7 year old girls cheerleading. When I began to tutor, I enjoyed being one on one with the child. I am very patient, punctual and considerate. I know children that need extra help need extra time. I find it personally rewarding to supplament a child's education. My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.
