My comments on tutoring Elementary Phonics : The phonics families are the best way to learn to read.

I graduated from Eastern Oregon University in 1988 and have taught elementary age for many years. I homeschooled my seven children part of that time and now they are responsible, successful people. Now I'm a retired elementary school teacher and have a half day preschool in the bottom of my home. It has it's own entrance and play yard. Love my kids! In our school, I teach sign language Zoophonics, curiosity using the inspired Reggio Emilia style, a unique method from Italy. We have lots of fun.
Reggio Emilia inspired way of learning where the children learn while they play and create. Lots of imagination and fun.

The style that I feel the child can learn from the best.
For years I have helped the children of family and friends with reading homework. I believe that every child learns in their own way. I have studied behavior for many years and I find it rewarding that once you take the time and learn of a child's way of learning, I bring in empathy to understand how to help them to their needs. Not everyone learns the same way. It is up to the teacher to teach them successfully.

As a Controller, analyst and consultant of Computerized Accounting systems for small and medium sized businesses, I have 25 years plus, of extensive experience training and teaching both accounting and non-accounting executives how to data entry in 'subsidiary journals' like Accounts Receivable, Payable, Payroll, Fixed Assets and how to reconcile to 'control accounts' in General Ledger. My approach to tutoring would be to explain the mechanics of recording business transactions (two sides to a transactions, thus "double entry") rather than rote learning. This would benefit them to pass exams as well as in business if they chose to pursue a career in business and finance.
The most enjoyable and satisfying part of installing new Accounting systems in businesses was the opportunity to teach the accounting staff how to generate timely and accurate financial statements. Internal controls ... read more

I love to experience the thrill of success as a child begins to understand. I enjoy seeing their confusion transform into understanding. I believe children have brilliant minds that just need to be directed or focused in a way that incorporates their frame of reference. I have seen how children become excited with learning as they understand concepts and begin to apply them to practical situations. I believe children love to learn! Sometimes they just need to have some direction along the way. I find great satisfaction in helping a child build confidence with learning.
As "stay at home" mom of 6, I have used my two Bachelors' degrees for the education of my own children. I've taught them essential reading and writing skills, study habits, organization skills, science projects, practical application of principles, and a love of learning. I have also home schooled my children ... read more

I have taught as a program director, a school volunteer, and a community college instructor. While the majority of my experience has been with high school students, I have also worked with elementary and middle school students, college undergraduates and medical students. I have also provided continuing education for high school and middle school science teachers.
My approach to tutoring in most cases is to help students find answers themselves through questioning and examples rather than by giving direct instruction, which I reserve for students who are struggling with course content rather than understanding. I believe that all students have the capacity to learn and that many undermine themselves by not having faith in their own abilities. The experience of mastering content and understanding can help a student not only with the subject matter at hand, but also with their futu ... read more

Throughout my recent graduate courses in social work, I've remained active in my teaching and feel the better able I am to listen and understand, the more prepared I am to teach. I believe learning to be a joyful experience and am not only patient in the moments where a concept is yet to be grasped, but happy to meet the challenge and find a new way to express an idea or create a new opportunity for a child to have that "aha!" moment. Above all else, I am flexible and understand that there is no single way to learn. I will adapt as necessary, but remain consistent in my expectations, always believing that with support, all children can succeed.
I am trained and experienced in individual, small-group, and classroom instruction and curriculum design in a variety of settings with youth in kindergarten through college. I have a strong background in integrated curricula and project- ... read more

I received a BA in General Business from WSU, and was honored as a Cum Laude graduate. The courses were varied and included a wide array of math application, from supply and demand curves to interest rate calculations. My classmates gave me the nickname "Webster" because I was frequently asked to edit their papers and to tutor them in several different subjects. I love working with teenagers, and watching their faces change when they really GET a concept for the first time!
I believe students will rise to the level of expectations set for them. I am a bit of a comedian, and I use humor to allay frustration in learning situations. I believe in setting goals and charting a specific path for reaching them, while being flexible enough to alter the path along the way. Praise and positive reinforcement are powerful tools when teaching challenging material, and I use them frequently.

I integrate as many subjects as possible and seek to provide the missing schema, background experience and knowledge, that is critical to learning to a true state of understanding and mastery. Every subject is interesting to a child who can understand it and apply it. Through an understanding of social styles, learning styles, multiple intelligences and the best of brain-based research, I provide that experience to every student.
My last class was a self-contained 6th grade, with a 34% ELL and 14% special education population. My class average reading level rose from 4.6 to 7.1. Of all the students in the school who surpassed the required State testing and higher District goals in both reading and math, 75% came from my class, as did the winners of the school's essay contest, spelling bee and geography competition. I started teaching English-Language Arts & U.S. History in central California, where I taught 8th graders for two years. Then I moved to South Korea, where I taught ESL for one year. After that amazing experience, I moved to South Lake Tahoe and taught English to 7th & 8th graders. While teaching, I also tutored after-school programs for kids that ranged from 2nd grade to high school. I have tutored in the subjects of reading, writing, life science, elem. and middle school math, and Spanish. Currently, I am tutoring two sets of kids in elementary subjects, with an emphasis on reading comprehension, writing essays, building vocabulary, and working on math skills. I feel it is my responsibility as a teacher to help the student realize their potential by engaging my student in the learning process. It is my belief that every student has the potential to learn their material. A major benefit from my experience as an education major is learning that students have different learning styles as well as different intelligences in their acquisition of their life's experiences. It is my responsibility to see that a student feels comfortable and safe in their learning environment. When a student finds that they have minimal distraction they are more focused on their lessons.

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach is to incorporate multiple learning styles (visual, auditory and so on). I also like to incorporate skills training as part of a scenario when possible. Using techniques like appropriate background music, brief stretch breaks, having the children read to Sierra, my golden retriever, are all techniques that I would like to use. Teaching children would be a joy and very rewarding. I had trouble learning to read when I was young until I attended Mrs. Bird's class. She took the time to meet with me one-on-one and taught me to read and changed my life in the process. Seeing adult learners’ eyes light up when they "get it" have been some of the best times in my career. I would love to see that light in a child's eyes too.
My master's thesis was on computer-based training. My experience includes teaching end users and other trainers (train the trainer). Classroom train ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In grade school I was the kid to whom others turned for help. In high school I found myself tutoring my friends in subjects as diverse as plane geometry, algebra, latin, and essay writing. It was not until I was working to earn my BA in English literature and volunteering as composition tutor in the English department language lab, however, that I discovered the real joy for me of one on one instruction. Since those days I have co-authored, books and articles and helped edit and revise material for academic journals in addition to informal tutoring for friends and family.
My job as tutor is not to lead students to learning, but rather to help them master the fundamental skills that will help them find their own unique paths. A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with students of all ages in a variety of scenarios, but my most recent experience is teaching as an adjunct professor at Eastern Washington University. My course was "History 110: The American Experience." I had 52 students and we met Monday through Friday. I received excellent reviews and several of my students wrote to me or came to my office to tell me that I helped make history interesting for the first time. I have a passion for education and I take that passion into working with students. My degrees in history and theology, combined with my professional experience, have allowed me to learn how to research well, write properly, and present information in a stimulating way.
