Online Music Lessons and Elementary Test Prep/Homework Help

I am currently a general music teacher at Samsula Academy, an elementary school in New Smyrna Beach, FL. I teach general music classes to students in grades K-5, as well as chorus and band. I received my Bachelor's degree from Marywood University in Scranton, PA and began my Master's studies at University of Central Florida. I currently aspire to study Irish traditional music in Ireland in the near future, and would continue to offer online tutoring services during those studies. At Samsula Academy, I offer private music lessons. I have mostly taught piano, but I also have taught trumpet, trombone, drums, flute, clarinet, saxophone, and violin. As a part of my undergraduate studies, I took methods courses in all band and orchestra instruments, so I am trained to teach most anything. I also have experience assisting in the elementary classrooms in reading, writing, and math, and preparing ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my years of tutoring I have found that there are many different ways that people learn. Once you figure this out learning is easy and enjoyable. I first go over what my students have been doing to learn and study the material. Once we have established their individual learning style, we go over what they can do to improve in that subject and perhaps with the overall learning of any material. I want my students to feel comfortable with the material, to understand it on many levels, not just to memorize the information. I strive to annihilate the fear students’ feel of any subject they know little about or have problems understanding. I want to make a difference in how people learn and how they feel about learning difficult or different materials.

After finishing my degree in Computer Science, I felt that the education I obtained wasn't completely aligned with my ultimate goal as a professional, Video Game Developer. Video Games creation requires many different disciplines, usually combining art (Audio/Visual, theater) and science (Math, programming) to produce a highly immersive interactive experience. Having professional experience in multimedia production, creating Educational CD-ROMS for children, plus finishing my degree at Full Sail, has allowed me to teach Video Games at a university level and become part of the Game Developing community.
My favorite moment in the classroom is right after some laughter occurs; students are open and receptive to more knowledge. Even better, their inhibitions are put aside for a second and they're unafraid to ask the questions they need. I like to be light-hearted and fun, while underst ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is an art. It can and does vary for each individual. When I teach, I first attempt to assess what type of learner the child is. What causes the child to become a sponge? My goal is to provide the best understanding of the material possible. I firmly believe that with a if you allow the person to do the work and just simply facillitate them, they will come to realize they more than likely know alot more than they originally thought. This process helps to boost self-esteem which can at times are shown by the grades of the students after our tutoring sessions and even during.

Both my undergraduate and graduate collegiate experiences have given me ample knowledge and skills to draw from with regard to teaching and tutoring. The experience of doing it, however, gave me much more. While I was in graduate school at the University of Texas I tutored women athletes. My teaching career began immediately after I finished graduate school in Austin, Texas. I taught in Austin for a year at Virginia College and then took a teaching job at the Florida Keys Community College. I was a Speech Teacher. Teaching students how to present themselves in verbal and written presentation was rewarding because I knew that I was preparing them for the future. Tutoring and teaching are great because both student and teacher learn; it's a two-way street.

Teaching and explaining comes very naturally to me. I enjoy relating to children and teens and seeing them understand things. I am patient and creative, and I try to have children take ownership of their learning. I love to see them succeed and feel like they have accomplished something when they have completed a task or learned something new.
After graduating from Calvin College with a BS in Biology, I moved to Seoul, Korea, where I taught ESL for one year. I then went on to work at an international school, where I was the early elementary supervisor teaching kindergarten through second grade. I taught high school chemistry, elementary art, and music there too. For the past two years I have worked as an educational assistant at a private middle school in British Columbia, Canada. At the Universtiy of Florida I began giving private guitar and music theory lessons. I found that I was well suited to teach beacause I am very patient and can relate information in a very efficient way. I went on to get my degree in television production and I am continuting my education with courses in digital music production. Working with children is also a strong suit of mine. I have three younger syblings and have done volunteer softball coaching as well as babysitting.
I believe each child has the ability to learn as long as the teacher is patient and good at finding exactly how that child relates to the information. I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement and learning through repetition. Each student is a new opportunity to improve and learn more about how to teach. I am excited to pursue a career in education.

A Little Bit About Me...

The Socratic method of teaching has been instilled in me as the most engaging and successful approach to learning. Through a series of deliberate, well-directed, leading questions from a tutor, the student arrives at the "answer" through his or her own reasoning process, as opposed to getting the answer through a tutor spitting out information. This approach builds confidence in the student, rather than dependence on the tutor, as the student receives a model of the learning process that they will ultimately be able to implement themselves. I believe that this approach, utilized by a tutor such as myself who is patient and encouraging, will never fail.
While serving the education department at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, I gave hour long tours to student groups ranging from elementary age to college level in which I led discussions on several works of art. As a historian, I have ... read more

My passion is to work with children. All children are different, therefore each child learns differently and at one's own pace. My goal is to help each child improve in the appointed subject. I use a collaborative method of teaching; keeping it content- and student-centered. However, I maintain organization and facilitation, while adjusting my approach so it adapts to each individual. Keeping it student-centered allows the student to recognize one's own needs and set goals for his or her own self. Each child is able to reach for their higher self, with the help from the right individual.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught people of all ages, including children, students (elementary, high school and college), and the public through my early jobs as a swimming instructor, and my work as a teaching assistant and educational instructor. As a result, I have learned to target my lesson plans for specific audiences and to recognize the wide range of backgrounds and knowledge encountered in both formal and informal educational settings. I have taught classes involving lecture and laboratory instruction complemented by experiments in the field. I designed the syllabus, ordered supplies, set-up and broke-down lab equipment, supervised teaching assistants, and ensured that appropriate risk management policies were implemented and followed. I have also mentored several undergraduate research internships. While my teaching experience is diverse, it is by no means comprehensive, and I welcome the opp ... read more

I feel that I can fit into any situation and connect with children from many different backgrounds. I feel that by being the child's friend and connecting with them on a personal level, you can motivate them to open up and immerse themselves in what you are teaching them. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are respected and feel as though their success is important to the person helping them.
I am very driven to work in the education field and to help others succeed. Even as a young child I yearned to teach and pass on what I was learning. During high school and college I volunteered and worked with under-privelaged students. I have studied a variety of subjects in college and feel confident that I can tutor in many subjects, specifically the social sciences and history. I have tutored in psychology, music, elementary and middle school math, English, anat ... read more

Currently I work at an alternative school for students with learning disabilities and behavioral problems teaching Math and Art. Although there is no art program, I voluntarily head up art contests and help students paint murals on the campus. My degrees are in Computer Information Systems, French, and Spanish. After being a Computer Programmer for five years, I decided to become more involved with education. I've taught Math at City College, ESOL at Valencia Community College, and all subjects in elementary schools. I've voluntarily tutored disadvantaged children at a local church and helped my sisters with their homework for years. Overall, I'm a jack-of-all-trades and enjoy discovering the many unique ways students think and learn.
