A Little Bit About Me...

The process is just as important as the product. If a student can come up with the correct answer, but he or she has no idea how or why it is correct or how they got it, I feel like their learning is incomplete. Especially in Math, but also in many other subjects, concepts build upon each other. For this reason, I like to explain not just *how* to get there, but also *why* we got that answer; then students have a firmer foundation for the trickier concepts. I love seeing the lightbulb "go on," when kids finally "get it."

I have had the privilege of attending and graduating from Southeastern University with my Bachelor of Arts in English and Intercultural Studies. In the summer of 2012 I completed an eight-week internship teaching English to refugees in Omaha. This past year I held a job as a teachers assistant in the English Department of Southeastern University. I helped assist our majors, did some grading, and wrote newsletters. My comments on tutoring Study Skills : Homework and study skills are one of my strength areas. I can help you get the most out of your textbook resources, knowing when to ask the teacher for extra help, searching for online help effectively, creating study materials such as note cards, and generally setting up a study routine that works for you.

I prefer personal and small group teaching, but I can also do online tutoring with Webex. I like to get to know my students and their goals. I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.
