A Little Bit About Me...

I take a non-judgmental approach, and start where the student is at. Putting a client at ease and forming a trusting connection with the tutor, is vital to the ultimate success of tutoring, (as well as competency in the subject matter.)

A Little Bit About Me...

The process is just as important as the product. If a student can come up with the correct answer, but he or she has no idea how or why it is correct or how they got it, I feel like their learning is incomplete. Especially in Math, but also in many other subjects, concepts build upon each other. For this reason, I like to explain not just *how* to get there, but also *why* we got that answer; then students have a firmer foundation for the trickier concepts. I love seeing the lightbulb "go on," when kids finally "get it."

In the summer of 2012 I completed an eight-week internship teaching English to refugees in Omaha. This past year I held a job as a teachers assistant in the English Department of Southeastern University. I helped assist our majors, did some grading, and wrote newsletters. I also was part of a group research project for my class, History of English, which is to be published. I also, have a considerable amount of child care experience. My comments on tutoring Study Skills : Homework and study skills are one of my strength areas. I can help you get the most out of your textbook resources, knowing when to ask the teacher for extra help, searching for online help effectively, creating study materials such as note cards, and generally setting up a study routine that works for you.

I prefer personal and small group teaching, but I can also do online tutoring with Webex. I like to get to know my students and their goals. I can help students set those goals, make plans, and achieve. I have lots of experience creating curriculum materials and lessons, and I try to find a real-life application to each lesson.
My career path has winded around quite a bit but always focuses on computer science and math education. My education experience has included tutoring freelance, tutoring on USD's payroll, leading group study sessions, providing supplemental instruction for university coursework, leading workshops at a computer camp, writing workshops for that camp, and ultimately teaching math full time in a high school. My computer science field experience includes several part-time jobs, freelance web development, personal projects, an internship with NASA, and ultimately ... read more

With my experience in many classrooms, I am a firm believer that all children can learn. However, each child has different needs, and they will learn in different ways. As a teacher, I try to provide instruction in a variety of ways to accommodate to a variety of learners. Many struggling students will succeed if material is taught in a different form. Hands-on and discovery learning are both excellent ways of adapting for students. I believe the best way to teach a child is to get to know them and their interests, and provide instruction in a way that fits their needs.

First and foremost, getting to know the student and what appeals to them most is the objective. Correlating things that excite or motivate him/her with the subject of study helps maintain focus. From there on, giving a lead for the student to follow has worked best for me. Like filling in a blank to complete a statement, this approach provides a context for the pupil to work in, a guide. Above all, bending to find the angle best suited for the individual goes.
For some time, I have been in other student's lives influencing their skills learning experience. As a grade school student, I worked with elementary school teachers for a couple of years, helping children in lower grade levels with math and science. Time and time again, through earning my diploma, BS in Biology and attending medical/dental school, I've invested my abilities to help students through lessons and courses that w ... read more

I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.
Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.

A Little Bit About Me...

The thing I enjoy most about teaching is seeing a concept "click" in a child's head. I feel that this is possible with all children if the right strategy is used to teach them. Students learn in lots of different ways. I feel it would be my job as a tutor to find out what would work in each student's academic life. Whether it be a more hands-on approach, or simply reading from a book, I find what helps each child to learn most effectively. This, in turn helps them to progress in their endeavors at school.
Throughout my college experiences I was given the opportunity to teach a diverse group of learners. I feel that this has prepared me in my efforts to become a better teacher. In my field based experiences and student teaching I learned about new approaches to teaching several subjects to elementary school students. These subjects include math, science, social studies, and languag ... read more
