My comments on tutoring World History : Highly qualified k-8

For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I served on the district's math council for 5 years, helped direct the district's science fair one year, and worked extensively in the field of arts-based curriculum development. I have taught K for 13 years. I understand the value of one on one time, and that students are all different. Recently I spent 10 months teaching missionary children in Uganda. There I taught 4th, 5th, and 7th graders. Students in my class have had vision issues, autism, aspergers, and ADD/ADHD. I believe that when children are able to have the subject matter displayed to them in a 3D format, they are able to comprehend it's use in the real world. It also keeps their attention span active. For example, once when working on fractions with a student I brought in playdoh that we shaped into a pie. The child was able to create the fractions with their hands and was excited about taking pieces away and counting what was left in the pie.
