Hands-on, smiles-on!

Hey! My names Bethy! I'm 13 years old and in 8th grade. I've been tutoring since I was in 5th grade. I can tutor all ages in almost any subject. Last year I had the highest GPA in my whole school! I love teaching anyone who is willing to learn! I also teach children with learning disabilities and special needs.
I am very laid back and flexible. While I might be calm I only have 3 rules, 1. Be respectful, 2. the words "I can't" are not allowed :), and 3. have fun! I tend to create games based on the skills that are being taught and I'm not into lecturing, my approach is very hands. Learning can be fun!

Everyone needs a little help here and there.

As a tutor my strength lies in supporting, motivating and encouraging students along with teaching them the importance of discipline and staying focused on studies. I have noticed that for some students the actual problem is not the subject/curriculum, they need help with time management and study skills. I try to teach students how to learn better and faster by managing their time efficiently and by organizing how they study.

A Little Bit About Me...

At Stonehill, I developed a love for teaching and helping students work through difficult problems until the material “clicks”. I have an enthusiasm for the sciences that comes through and from my own personal experiences, I know how much a teacher/mentor figure can make in a student’s life.I try to convey the material in multiple ways to make it more understandable and relatable. I believe in guiding students to the correct answer, even if it means going astray, rather than solving problems for them,as this allows for the development of independent thinking and learning. I am patient and dedicated and believe that education is critical and that everyone should have the chance to succeed at it.

I take a creative approach to learning and cater to each student's unique learning style. I assess their knowledge base, and I make learning fun by explaining and developing ideas in a way they prefer and in a way they best learn from. I have a warm, caring personality, and I try to approach any set of challenges in a cheerful light. I also like to instill confidence within my students whenever possible. For instance, the student and I work together through problems giving them a greater sense of ownership of their knowledge and abilities, in comparison to just being told the answer.

More About This Tutor...

I am a former UConn graduate (1984) with a BS in Marketing. Many of my electives were in mathematics, enabling me to work as a student tutor on campus. I have also completed coursework in anatomy and physiology. In addition to tutoring college level students I have worked with elementary and middle school children in church youth groups, assisting with bible verse memorization and reading skills,as well as staging music productions. My experience also includes homeschooling my own children and assisting in classrooms.
My teaching style is relaxed, but focused. I believe all children can be natural learners, especially when they find something that interests them. Patience is the key with children. Every child has their own pace and learning style. Some are very visual learners while others need to be able to be more hands-on. It is very rewarding helping someone succeed.

I am patient and believe that every child has the ability to learn. Not all children have the same learning style and I can adjust to ensure the child is gaining an understanding of the material and concepts. I prefer to be a coach and allow the student to discover on their own. I will provide examples and guidance but want the student to learn he or she can figure things out for themselves.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most math education is pure calculation. This is important, but becomes tedious. Many children can’t learn like a computer and thus lose interest or struggle. My approach is different. I focus on logic and fundamentals because all of mathematics is logically built on a very simple foundation that anyone can understand. This foundation is necessary but often neglected. I believe I can build this foundation in anyone. Mathematics also has a lot of interesting history, and I know a lot of stories. A well placed story of humanity is often emotionally helpful. Overall I foster a relaxed environment, but never too relaxed. This is mathematics after all, the most rigorous academic discipline. But rigor will be a result instead of a prerequisite.

A diverse education at Wesleyan University has prepared me to tutor many high school subjects. I earned my BA at Wesleyan in Music but I almost double majored in Environmental Science. The high expectations of professors at Wesleyan pushed me to greatly improve my writing ability, with my music thesis earning me honors in music. Environmental sciences sharpened my science and mathematic ability. Extensive courses in music prepared me to tutor music students in any background or concentration.
I greatly enjoy finding a way to inspire a child to understand the problem at hand. Through from my experience in grade school and my observation of students that attend tough schools I've realized the monotonous class schedule and disciplinary philosophy of most schools deflates most student's desire to succeed. I enjoy tutoring students; especially when I feel that students are improving greatly because of the time I spent with them. The most recent high school student I tutored is actually in College in Pensylvannia. I believe any student is capable of learning any subject when they are taught in a gentle and patient manner. It is important to help the student gain confidence with the subject and to build his self-esteem. When I did my first student teaching in the 4th grade I succeeded in teaching the children all subjects. I also taught one Spanish girl how to read English and learn her math. My second term of student teaching was in the 3rd grade. Again I succeeded in teaching all subjects to my students. All my students were involved in learning. My greatest year of teaching was at Saint Joseph School. I taught middle school English from 5th grade through 8th grade. All my students were very busy learning their English lessons. Also durning that assignment I taught my home room 6th graders Religion, Health, Reading and life.
I used all learning styles. I taught and they wrote. We had group assignments and presentations. All students increased their English scores. They all succeeded in their learning. I loved teaching and made sure that they all had a wonderful learning experience. ... read more
