Teaching is what I’ve been doing my whole life. In every position I’ve held, there has been an opportunity for me to teach or train. I begin by establishing rapport with the student, and usually I prefer a lighthearted, encouraging style of interaction. I believe every student is capable of learning, but may not have been shown the strategies and skills that will best suit them. I like to help the student identify their learning style, and then teach using strategies that will coincide with that learning style. Often when the student has been taught some different strategies for learning, s/he is more capable of tackling new lessons without additional help. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica, I learned that our goal was to "work ourselves out of a job." While working at Thornhill Education Center, I had the opportunity to work with students and help teach GED classes. My main focus was math. I also had the opportunity to teach a level 1 accounting class for community education.
I don't think I have really developed a "unique style" by only teaching a year or so. I am a very patient person and I really like to see the "sparkle" in a students eye, when they truly understand something for the 1st time.
