My teaching style is simple. In my classroom, I am the teacher, the gate keeper and the executioner. This is premised by my belief in the contingency theory, tempered in some ways that an open, honest and frank discussion in the class is a vital and productive way to educate.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began tutoring high school and middle school students when I was a college student and high school soccer coach. Upon completion of my degrees and being awarded my teaching certification I began teaching in a high school math classroom. During my eight years in the classroom I taught all levels of math from Pre-Algebra through AP Calculus. The past two years I have not been in the classroom but have continued with tutoring, mostly high school and middle school students, but occasionally elementary and college students as well.
I believe that a good portion of teaching well is listening well. As I listen to my students' needs I am better able to help them through whatever may be frustrating them. Helping students be successful is the most important aspect of teaching, in my opinion. Each student is unique in his or her learning style. A teacher's job is to find the way in which a student learns best and to encourage them to think on their own. After college, I taught secondary mathematics for 10 years, then became a doctoral student at Oregon State University. I enjoy teaching and creating interest in the subject that is being taught. I have learned from experiance that the more interested the students become in the subject, the better they learn. I have found that many students have a psychological barrier when it comes to mathematics and the sciences. Once that barrier is brought down, the students interest in the subject starts to perk, and it's all uphill from there.
