I believe in meeting students right where they are, and letting them progress at their own rate. I make learning as relevant as possible and incorporate many hands-on learning opportunities. I present information in a multitude of ways, using modifications and graphic organizers. School should be fun, and most importantly, it should make sense!!
After teaching for 12 years, I decided to step away from the classroom in order to spend more time with my own two kids. I taught in both Rochester City and Brighton, with kids in grades 7-12. Many of my students struggled in school for all different reasons. I would love the opportunity to work with you. School can be really frustrating, but it doesn't have to be. I know a few tricks to help it go more smoothly, and I'd love to share them with you!

My focus is on each student's unique needs and skills

The key to my tutoring approach is that every student is unique. After we discuss what each student wants to focus on, I ask them to write a paper about a subject that we agree on. Then I take them through several revisions, with each revision focusing on key things they need to work on. I often recommend that students practice creating sentences and paragraphs that focus on each separate concept or skill they need to become proficient in. I follow that procedure over several appointments in which they write additional essays until my students are ready to move ahead without my assistance.

During my time at Houghton College, I was very involved with the student-run publications that the school offered. My junior and senior years I worked as a journalist for the school newspaper (http://www.houghtonstar.com/). I wrote articles covering diverse topics ranging from essays on sub-culture to an article covering the Oscars. My senior year, I was given the position of co-editor of the school literary magazine, after having been involved with the publication for two years prior to receiving this position. A Little Bit About Me...

I taught Office Technology to adults for ten years. I have been subbing K-6 for the past two years in local school districts. Adult educations consisted of computer applications, business math and English, filing, and job search skills. Now I work with kids who have difficulty in a traditional setting.
My teaching style is one on one with students making continuous progress at their own paces. I love to work with elementary students aged ten and under. Working with non-tradionat students was fun and challenging. I had to relate to them differently (of course) from the younger kids.

I am a former tenured junior high English teacher with a permanent New York State teaching certificate in English 7-12. I have much experience as a private tutor of elementary through high school students in English grammar, expository writing, the study of literature, etc. I have taught GED classes and have extensively trained and worked as a certified tutor for our county’s Literacy Volunteers organization.
My teaching style has evolved over the years to one of guided instruction. My first task is to get to know my student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style and proceed from that platform. I am very patient and encourage a respectful bond between my student and me as the tutor. I believe students perform best when they feel comfortable and accepted in the learning setting. That being said, I require and expect my students to complete assigned tasks and approach the tut ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

My teaching style.... depends on the day, depends on the students, depends on the topic. One minute I can be dancing around the room and the next we're having a more serious discussion. My expectations are very high and I always push my students to do "just a bit better" than they think they can at that moment. At the end of the day, a lot of "just a bit better"'s add up to a whole lot! I wholeheartedly believe that each student has a potential that is limited only to their current experience--giving them new opportunities and showing them not only what they can do but what the world has to offer them... this can change a kid's life!

After graduating from Cornell University in May of 2009, I was hired as a legislative assistant in the New York State Senate where I write press releases, columns, letters, and speeches as well as correspond with various state and federal agencies on a daily basis. Throughout my experiences I have learned to write and communicate in clear and direct terms and believe that I have the knowledge and ability to assist any student in achieving their goals. As a martial arts instructor for 3 years, I developed unique tools to motivate and teach discipline to students of all ranks, ages, and ability levels. I believe these same principles can be applied to teaching any subject matter.
My teaching style revolves around patience. No one can learn overnight and no one who is struggling already can work under pressure. It is vital to cultivate a strong and positive attitude toward the subjec ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching students who are willing to learn. You don't have to love to write as much as I do, but it's my hope that I can make it a little easier for you. I am very structured, but only so that it's easier to understand how to write. I will make many suggestions about what I believe needs to be done in order to improve your work. Whether or not you make those changes is your choice. Your words are YOUR words. I would never assume my thoughts into your work. I am very easy-going but also hard-working and driven at the same time. I don't want my time wasted, and I don't want to waste yours. I hope to be able to make a difference in your education and make the process of receiving extra help rewarding.
