Math Can be Fun!

My teaching style is for the student to be methodical with their work and identify key words. I offer correction but also like to be patient to truly understand which part gives the student a struggle.
I have been tutoring in mathematics from basic elementary math to Calculus I for the last 10 years. Studying engineering showed me how meticulous I had to be with my study habits and I am now able to teach other students these same tips. I currently work as a tutor at Gulf Coast State College where I am familiarized with the material and common questions daily. I also offer freelance tutoring for students of all ages.

I have been fortunate to teach students with Special Needs and Learning Challenges. In addition, I was able to teach Adult Basic education to inmates at a state prison. Due to the diversity of educational needs, I have been able to teach Math, Social Studies, History, Marine Biology, Horticulture, Biology, English, and Literature. During the past several years I have home-schooled my daughter and a several studentsby referral.
I enjoy seeing the "Light Bulb" come on when a student grasps a concept. I tend to defer to the students learning style and teach to their need and understanding. Over the years, I have found that this a most dynamic and effective means of imparting information. In addition, the student is more apt to retain information when taught in this manner.

As a student attending Florida State University's Civil Engineering program I was required to regularly learn, understand and apply complex mathematical equations, and scientific concepts to both hypothetical and real world problems. I was also required to regularly exercise my grammatical skills through regular lab reports. In regards to tutoring experience, as a high school student attending A.C. Mosley High School during my senior year it was requested by a M.A.P.P.S. (the school's AP program) guidance counselor to assist freshman and sophomore students who came into the office with subjects they were having difficulty with. More recently, as a student at F.S.U. I have lead study groups on an rotation system.

As a student of psychology, I have always been interested in using my knowledge to help others improve themselves. My experience teaching academic subjects is fairly limited, however, for the past four years I have volunteered as an assistant instructor at my martial arts school whenever my sensei has needed the help, which has given me ample opportunity to work on my teaching techniques with a wide variety of students. Currently I am working with a group of younger children on their advanced self-defense techniques, however I have worked with older children, teenagers and adults in the past.
I've always enjoyed the opportunity to explain things I'm familiar with to people who need it explained. That said, I prefer a teaching environment in which the student has the opportunity to discuss the subject, and I like to keep examples practical if at all possible. A Little Bit About Me...

I have always enjoyed teaching and working with students. I believe a teacher must demonstrate patience and be flexible to the student's abilities. I have seen first hand what can happen if a teacher takes an interest in a child's education. I worked as a scout leader at a church in Pensacola. Most of the children were inner city kids who had very little parental involvement. Once the kids saw someone cared and spent time with them, they worked even harder to learn the material and were very successful. I believe a teacher can have the same impact. I am always available by phone if your child is struggling with a topic. I am a patient, easy going person that will allow a child to meet their potential.

Many of the things in life that we don't "get" are things we don't understand. When teaching, I try to break things down and simplify them so they can be easily understood. Often the kids in my class are those who do not like to be challenged, so I incorporate a lot of questions to provoke thinking and problem solving on their own. Since repetition is a key component to learning, I review a lot which requires patience but pays great dividends in the long run. I try to keep things fresh and fun by adding a lot of variety, and also like to motivate with real-world examples so students can see a practicle use for what they are learning.
I am in my sixth year of teaching in elementary school, and previous to that I taught for 3 years (GED prep, Life Skills, Cognitive Skills) at a prison. Prior to that, I worked as a Social Worker for ten years for the Florida Dept. of Children & ... read more

Children are individuals and you must find their style of learning and be able to adapt your teaching style for that child. I believe that you must geniunely love children and teaching to be able to reach children. They can sense when someone really cares. I have a passion for learning that I believe translates to the children I work with.
I taught preschool for 5 years and had a home day care center for 4 years. I have worked as a paraprofessional at Springfield Elementary for the 3 years and was an after school tutor for the SES program for 2 terms for two different companies. Throughout my education experience, I was taught that whole learning is the best form of education. An education is not just gained through books; every life experience is capable of teaching a child. Math can be taught through books, games or even by counting the number of sprinkles on their sundae. Science can be taught by explaining why the cloud is in the sky and why it is raining. My experience has taught me that each child is different and how they learn is different. Each experience must be tailored to each child and when accomplished the child will excel. This is not always easy, but the reward of seeing that moment of comprehension in a child’s eyes is worth the effort!
I began my teaching experience during college by first working as a teacher’s aide, after which I transitioned into substitute teaching, tutoring and after school care. Eventually I graduated and worked ... read more
