I have high expectations for all of my students. They know it, and when we're done, they're proud of what they've accomplished. I teach SAT, for example, and expect all of my students to earn at least a 9 out of 12 on the essay portion. I coach each one on employing his or her strengths to produce a good essay. With beginners, I focus on organizing the presentation, clear declarative sentences, and effective use of transitions to keep things moving. Then we progress to varying sentence types and common vocabulary (for example, don't say "very" all the time; use "extremely", "powerfully", "excessively", "dramatically". Same with "nice", "bad", and the perennial favorite "awesome.") Analyzing other students' essays provides a model and some metacognition (without the jargon) for students. I have a passion for teaching but waited until I gained some "real world" experience. I found that this has helped me relate to my students since I am able to make meaningful connections to their learning.
I like to discover what my students already know about the topic and to expose any misconceptions. Brainstorming activities work well for me. My whole education before college was in the hope I would become a teacher. I graduated with a B.A. in English and a minor in secondary education. I had two years of Spanish at Salem State, and three years before that in high school. I substituted for five years in the Revere school system, with long stints as permanent sub at the second grade level and at the junior high level in English/ foreign language introduction(Spanish,French). I really enjoyed this but I was now married, and retrained in steam engineering. I have been an operating engineer for 30 years. I take courses constantly. My wife and I ran a family daycare in our house for 24 years, although I was only an assistant, essentially for emergency substitution. I was licensed by the State coried.
