I am a voluntary tutor for students after school and I have been successfully doing that for a year now. My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort. Often, what comes out of a student's mouth is surprisingly wonderful, and I quickly say, "That's great! Write that down!" I was raised in a family of teachers. Both my parents have been teachers, and my older brother and sister are both currently teachers. As an psychiatric technician at Napa State Hospital, I was chosen to become a trainer, teaching a new computer system being implemented to nursing and other staff throughout the hospital. I developed classes and created lesson plans for those classes, as well as providing individual training. I held this position for 2 years.
