My comments on tutoring Elementary Math : I love teaching math and believe in using lots of hands on things to help students understand what they are doing. I also believe students neede to memorize the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.

As I graduated from college with my California State Teaching Credential,I was able to teach 2nd grade for the Los Angeles City School District for three years. During that time I sought to gain as much experience and expertise as possible to prepare me for teaching in a school for missionary children overseas. I studied Spanish intensively for a year in Mexico preparing me to work in Santiago, Chile where I taught first and second grade for almost 40 years. I am fluent in Spanish and have taught English as as second language.
I have enjoyed very much working with children and I know that every student has his own learning style and my teaching must be adapted to them. Elementary Math is one of my top subjects! Reading was always my favorite subject; math not so much. I believe strongly children need manipulatives and hands on experiences with math. I wish they had ten frames when I was learning addition and subtraction. I love teaching math in K-2 now and making it concrete vs abstract. I also like relating it to stories that talk about numbers and problems and having children use art to represent their understanding of the story. It's so much fun this way!

I currently have a Florida Teaching Certificate, 17 yrs. teaching in PreK - 2nd grade, and 4 yrs. tutoring. I have always loved being around young children. It was no surprise that I ended up pursuing an Early Childhood Education Bachelor's and Master's Degree. Since I moved to Florida, I have spent time volunteering in Kindergarten classrooms, substituting in K-5 classrooms, and I was even offered an extended subbing position in a Kindergarten classroom. My tutor experience began with a private company for 2 yrs. and now I find my own jobs through Care.com for the last 2 yrs.
