When I was in high school I had a lot of anxiety about math. I went back to college late in life and I was terrified that I would have to take a few math courses to graduate. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. After I graduated I got a job as a tutor working with high school students on preparation for college entrance exams and mathematics. I found that to be very rewarding.

She came out of third grade not understanding any of the math taught, because the teacher believe that people should feel good, not actually learn the material. I am particularly adept at explaining mathematical concepts and techniques to students. I find a way to build on what the student already knows. I find a way to explain a technique based on what the student already knows how to do. If a student does not know how to solve a problem, then I will show the student how I solve the problem, explaining my thinking and results as I go along. Then, I give the student a blank sheet of paper and they have to do the problem all by themselves. I may also change the problem a little and have them do it again to practice the technique.
