Since my sophomore year of high school, I have been helping my peers in subjects related to science and math. I helped the biology teachers create quizzes, grade papers, and provide after-school academic assistance to students. During my first semester of college, I participated in the Triunfo/Triumph Tutoring Program through El Centro Student Services at Colorado State University. This program targets K-5 grade students in the Poudre School District who need mentors to guide them with their studies. A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher’s assistant for photography in high school, I realized that I had a natural aptitude for teaching and breaking subjects down into manageable parts. In college, I was the person that other students came to for guidance with difficult topics, from mathematical equations to evolutionary theory. Since I earned my BS in wildlife biology, I have taught in many capacities, including as a substitute teacher and as a trainer for new employees. I have taught discouraged children to read and fostered latent talents. As a tutor for the Interfaith Refugee Ministry, I worked with children and adults from all over the world, including a woman from Zimbabwe who was studying to earn her GED, but struggled just to create a complete sentence in English. A Little Bit About Me...

I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.
My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.

I enjoy making the ancient world come alive to students, whether they are in elementary school or adults. Because learning Latin is a challenging endeavor, it provides ample opportunity to help the learner develop better study skills and therefore more confidence in themselves as a learner, which I believe is helpful to students as they make their way in life no matter where it takes them.
