Math & Test Prep Tutor

When I was in high school I had a lot of anxiety about math. I went back to college late in life and I was terrified that I would have to take a few math courses to graduate. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. After I graduated I got a job as a tutor working with high school students on preparation for college entrance exams and mathematics. I found that to be very rewarding.

Math, Science, Writing, and Critical Thinking

During my time at Colorado College, I worked as a chemistry tutor helping my younger peers traverse the challenging General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry course loads. But because of CC's rigorous alternative schedule--where you take one class at a time, for one month each class--it's necessary to learn to pick up new concepts very quickly, I often found myself being asked for help in classes I myself was taking. I never minded this, because being forced to explain something is the best way to ensure your own understanding of the concept. That is why I try to avoid directly answering questions my students ask me, instead dropping hints and asking questions of my own that guide the student to their own answer, in their own words.
My favorite part about teaching is the moment of sudden understanding that you can see in a student's eyes when they've got it. The challenge, of course, ... read more

As a current middle school teacher and former high school teacher, I have discovered several teaching techniques to attain the highest level of success in the middle school and high school classrooms. These experiences have helped me not only understand the diverse learning styles of a variety of individuals, but also find ways to make learning exciting and relevant. Over the past decade I have tutored, taught, and observed several subjects including math, science, language arts, and social studies. I believe these experiences have helped me understand and appreciate why children at times struggle through school. I have chosen education as my profession because I believe I have the ability to help people succeed in life and school.

The majority of my educational experience was acquired along with my teaching license at Colorado State University. This experience includes practicums in Fort Collins schools and 16 weeks of student teaching at Loveland High School. All 3 stints involved either algebra or geometry. While taking courses for my license, I augmented my math knowledge with classes that included calculus, abstract algebra, and non-Euclidean geometry. I also tutored a visually impaired student in her integrated math classes. I am now applying for my license, which I expect to receive in July. My practical math experience includes over 25 years as an engineer in the integrated circuit industry, including 10 years at Ball Aerospace.
I believe that education comprises steps from the known to the unknown in directions that cultivates curiosity. Therefore my first steps are to (1) become well acquainted with ... read more

While at Devry Institute of Technology, I was ranked in the top 3% of National Engineering students. This degree required advanced mathematics including Calculus, differential equations, and network synthesis. It also included computer programming and electronic circuit theory and design. In my career I have taught Windows, MS Office, robotics and programming to adults, helped teenagers graduate from high school, and helped my 7 year old daughter learn math.
I believe that everyone, children and adults alike, can learn through patience, creativity and organized lessons. I make it fun and interesting, and possess many years of interesting real world experiences to draw on to help students understand and learn.

My teaching style is pretty much dictated by the student and their preferred learning style or combination of styles. For example: a student may just lack confidence, some need help with basic subject skills, or may have a difficult time conceptualizing processes or procedures particularly in math and science.
I taught and tutored students at a Learning Center in Fort Collins for several years. The math curriculum covered basic, intermediate, and advanced math. I also taught study skill subjects. I've helped high school and college students with homework support in physics, chemistry, and advanced high school math. I have also substituted in math and science classes within the Loveland school district.

Teaching style varies with the subject. For math, I derive how to arrive at the answer without memorizing a process. Once the student has grasped a concept, I provide examples of varying 'difficulty' to show how to use the concept (the student should be able to apply it regardless of the problem’s complexity). With respect to science, visuals are key. Biology can be taught using models/diagrams representing various systems. Chemistry, though, requires a more hands-on approach. Teachers should guide students to the answers, allowing students to learn the most by creating their own diagrams/models. Every student learns differently, so it is necessary to discover how each student learns. Consequently, I tweak my style to suit his/her needs.
Since my sophomore year of high school, I have been helping my peers in subjects related to science and math. I helped the biology teachers cre ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a mathematics graduate, I am very detail-oriented and organized. Throughout college I tutored college students in calculus, business math, and statistics. I also tutored high school students in Algebra 1 and 2, Trigonometry, and Geometry. My easy-going and patient teaching style created many referrals that made me a successful and lucrative tutor. During the past six years I have tutored all levels of math with students ranging from Kindergarten to College age.
Although I earned a mathematics degree, I struggled to gain complete competence in algebra and geometry. I believe that my initial struggles have enabled me to become a better teacher because I constantly offer several ways of solving a problem to my students. I do not have to pause and wait for them to comprehend the material the first try. I can simply try re-phrasing or a different method. Also, I am intrinsica ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I’ve never bought into the argument that some kids just can’t do math. There is plenty of truth that some learn math much quicker and easier than others, but with a good work ethic and plenty of encouragement all kids are capable of learning these sciences. I feel the most important thing to do as a teacher is to stay positive, and try to somehow relate the math problems to real life situations. When correcting a student, it’s vital to carefully choose your words, for a harsh response will demoralize the student’s spirit and desire to learn.
As a recent CSU-Pueblo graduate with a mathematics major and a double minor in both physics and economics, I feel I have plenty of education for this position. I focus on the individual first - her style of learning, what makes her mind tick, how she responds to different methods of teaching. I believe that people are treated fairly by being treated individually. I also believe that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. I strive to set an example of genuine care and concern for the learner.
During the last five years I have taught others how to use social media, viral marketing, search engine optimization and social media marketing more effectively. I have been recognized by peers as a leader in the emerging space of social knowledge, which embraces a holistic approach to the social interactions an organization has internally and with customers and partners.

This allows me to best serve them a learners in the present, as well as to anticipate where difficulty might arise in the future. In my opinion every student learns in a different way giving his or her own approach to developing an understanding of new unfamiliar knowledge. Also these same students shift their methods depending upon the material being introduced and discussed. It is for this reason that I seek to first try to carefully understand the students learning style and adjust my teaching style to match. Examples: Leaning by example, teacher solves a math problem for the student in a step-by-step approach with the benefit of why the teacher is using these particular steps and approach.
