As Cal Poly SLO has one of the most competitive engineering programs on the west coast, I have a depth of knowledge in both math and sciences. After earning my B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, I lived in Germany, Ohio, and Central California while trying to figure out my place in this world. I settled for two years in Salinas, California where I taught pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry to junior high and high school students. During my time as a student studying Biological Sciences, I encountered varying levels of math and science ranging from statistics to calculus and basic biology to various types of advanced physiology. My teaching style would be that of Guided Discovery. This is a highly interactive style which leads the student to uncover the answer themselves as opposed to the teacher simply reciting the answer to them. Guided Discovery requires the student to learn by doing therefore developing necessary problem solving and deductive skills that will make them better learners and thinkers both now and in the future. I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment.
