Motivated to help struggling students find love of learning

I love to teach and coach and think it is important to understand that everyone learns and grasps concepts in different ways. I do not have a specific teaching style other than positive because each child requires their own approach.

In 2000 I volunteered in the local high school's journalism class because of my passion for writing. The following year I was offered a position as yearbook adviser, and I further developed my skills with high school students. Since 2004 I have been a private tutor, teaching all elementary subjects as well as most middle school and high school curriculum. In 2005 I began teaching annual writing workshops at Simpson College for 6th - 12th grade students. In 2006 I attended substitute teacher training, and I began substitute teaching in 2009. My teaching style is a mix of traditional and progressive. Traditional because I believe students need a solid foundation of core knowledge to prepare them for future learning. Progressive, because I believe facts should not only be taught in bits and pieces, but should be put into a meaningful context that the student can understand. My area of concentration is math, which can be hard for some students to grasp because of the way they are taught. Memorizing steps alone does not make sense to most students.
