Tutor - Writing, Reading, GED Prep

I worked for two years at the Cleveland State University Writing Center where I tutored writing and reading comprehension to undergraduate and graduate students of many academic backgrounds. I tutored students one-on-one and also taught writing workshops to groups of 3-6 students. In February of 2013, I began tutoring GED prep at Seeds of Literacy, an adult education organization in Cleveland. I am comfortable tutoring most topics covered on the test. If there is a topic I am unsure about, I will let you know up front. I am also certified to be a foster parent and subsequently possess well-rounded knowledge concerning the learning needs of children and young adults of varying abilities and learning styles.
My teaching style is patient, relaxed, and supportive. I tend to tailor my methods to the needs and personality of the student.

My comments on tutoring Poetry : In poetry, my knowledge is more towards the technical rather than aesthetic aspect.

I employ the Socratic method of asking lots and lots of questions. I see a tutorial as not a time for a student to soak up information, but to engage the mind and use the tools he has already been given. Of course, if a student truly doesn't know something crucial, I will tell him. I always try to make my instruction at least a little bit funny, and to connect the material to the student's interests, because these factors are known to enhance learning.
I have five years' experience as a writing tutor at my university, during which I wrote and presented papers at multiple regional conferences for university writing tutors. I rose to become one of the most respected and requested tutors out of my peers. I many credit hours of pedagogy and teaching methodology classes, both for Teaching ESL and Latin, and a semester of student teaching under my belt.

A Little Bit About Me...

The methods of teaching I was instructed when I obtained my Bachelor in Education at the University of Akron Ohio, from 1989-1991, was the following Integrated, Whole language approach and Montessori. The method we were instructed to use in the Akron city school system was Integrated which uses basic and whole language approach language Arts. These integrated units allow us the opportunity to make sure children are learning relevant information and applying that knowledge to real life scenarios. Language Arts is what I use in all my teachings and lesson plans.

I have been teaching for 25 years. I have tutored students in beginning Spanish and reading. I have also taught Sunday School and have been a substitute teacher for 11 years. I have just completed student teaching to become an Intervention Specialist. I intend to be certified this spring.
I vary my teaching style. Some students are content with just reading while others need hands-on and visual experience. I believe in using technology, as the Smart Board and computer instruction in addition to textbook instruction. I do my best to keep the student's interest in mind, and I work at the student's pace. My philosophy is the student comes first.

I enjoy working with students of all ages. My teaching style is nurturing and patient. Everyone learns at different speeds and no one approach works for all students. With children the involvement of a parent or grandparent is extremely important because they know the child and what he/she needs. Thus communication between the tutor and responsible adult is necessary for the child's success and clear expectations and goals are very important. Adult learners present a challenge in understanding what they want to accomplish with their tutoring. Sometimes the area needing refinement is related to career development and at other times a personal desire to improve. Learning never ends regardless of our age and I welcome an opportunity to share what I have learned in a very diverse career so it might be of assistance.

As a bilingual, internationally traveled persona, I have tutored students of all ages. From 1999-2003, I have served as a third grade Teacher's Aide focusing on on reading, memorization and basic math tutoring. Since 1999, I also have tutored middle, high school, and college students in pre-algebra, algebra, geography, computer skills, writing, and grammar. My master's degree has trained me in learning techniques.
In my experience, a person needs to be confident in him/herself in order to succeed. Learning of scholastic material is two fold: personal and academic development. By understanding the manner in which the student comprehends new information, we then can build upon their foundation by removing the frustration and replacing it with confidence that will extend into their personal life as well.

My style of teaching is one based on the importance of engaging the student in learning. I like to present them with examples of good craft, be it writing or sleight of hand, and then helping them come to the conclusion that a given piece of work needs improvement on their own. Furthermore, I feel it is important to have them fully understand and internalize why the improved version is superior. A light approach, with lots of humor and gentle guidance, has served me well both as an entertainer and teacher.
My passion for reading and the craft of writing drove me to pursue the study of English language and literature throughout my career at Yale and CWRU. As a graduate student at CWRU, I taught freshman English courses for a year. After graduation, I taught introductory English and composition for about a year at the community college level. Since then I have been an entertain ... read more

I earned a 98% in my College Algebra course this past fall so I am here to lend a hand to those who could use it. My focus in college was Communication with a minor in Philosophy. I also studied international relations for 6 months in Europe, earned a certificate in graphic and web design in San Francisco, and I am currently studying medical imaging here in Cleveland. I also have a great deal of experience as a singer and guitar player, which is where the bulk of my teaching experience comes from. I have taught music to dozens of people of all ages over the past 7 years.
I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can brea ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to work with all ages, and I believe my approach to tutoring varies depending upon each individual student. I believe in making sure the learning experience is fun by making it more innovative, comprehensive and something that can be applied to real life situations. I strive to make connections within a child's environment so that they can succeed in the classroom. I would love to help your child find the success that they deserve.
In high school and throughout my college career, I have tutored many ages- varying from age 8 to age 30.
