Most of the struggling students i have encountered seem to have a low confidence in themselves that interferes with their studies. I believe this is due to the manner in which students are tested; in order to fully understand a concept, the student has to be able to explain the concept and its application in his/her own words. By starting from the basic concept of the field of study and working up, the student can acquire real knowledge of the subject. This practice involves patience and kindness on the part of the tutor as well as a certain measure of creativity and flexibility in the teaching approach.

I make a point to have fun with my students, and my teaching style relies heavily upon real world examples that my students can both relate to and enjoy. I stand firmly against simply giving my students answers, but rather employ a strategy of leading my students to discovering their own answers. After receiving my teaching degree in May 2004 I was a substitute teacher in Washington State for 6 months. Then I spent the next 27 (Jan. 2005- Apr. 2007)months working as a Teacher Collaborator in the United States Peace Corps. Upon successful completion of the Peace Corps I moved to London, England and taught 6th grade from 2007-2010. During that time I did 1-1 tutoring with 10 children for a total of 100 hours. Tutoring was primarily in Math.

I love teaching all grades and levels. The most important aspect of teaching is to know your student. Each individual learns in different ways, some are tactile learners, some are visual, and some are auditory learners. Incorporating all aspects into my teaching style assists the retention of the material. It also has to be relatable to the student, so we have to use relevant examples that they understand. In mathematics, I was taught early on that in order to prove something you need three things: 1. facts that are obvious/self-evident 2. relate them in a logical way 3. frame these facts and their relationships inside of a theory Engineering is just applied mathematics. I believe that anyone can do it, at their level; the key for an educator is to have sufficient people skills to diagnose the problem areas a given student might have and then address those in the context of solving a given problem.
During my time at NC State, I worked at the mathematics laboratory for two years. In that short amount of time, I learned as much as I taught.
