I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri in 1993. Since graduation, I have acquired 15 years of experience through classoom teaching, tutoring and educational coaching. Most of my classroom experience was spent teaching 5th grade. I feel that the most important step to being an effective teacher is to make the material relevant. If the student does not see a relevant reason to learn the material, the learning curve will be much steeper. Then, I work hard to be sure the student understands my commitment to partner with him/her in the learning process, and that process is a two-way street. My style tends to range based on who I am trying to teach, and I suppose is most accurately labeled as adaptive. I understand that different people learn things in different ways, and so I try to accommodate that with my teaching. For instance if I found that a student learns better visually then I would attempt to use visual cues and examples in lesson plans to make the material as easy to understand as possible. I also believe in keeping a very loose and pleasant atmosphere, and making sure that everyone feels comfortable and safe, which I believe also assists in the learning process.

After graduating with a double major in Psychology and English with an emphasis in Literature, I started my graduate work in English and a teaching position as a high school English teacher. I took education certification courses and passed the state exam for the State of Florida for middle school and high school English. I was an instructional aide for Adult Education at Martin County where I tutored in spelling, grammar, literature and prepared adults for the G.E.D.
