My comments on tutoring Social Studies : Social Studies is a personal favorite subject for me to both learn and teach.

I believe in meeting a student at whatever level he or she is ready to work. I am friendly and like to develop a personal relationship with my students in order to know how to serve them better. I use technology as appropriate.
I began my career teaching music to students in grades K-8. I have always loved the Special Needs students and thus chose to pursue my Master's degree in the Special Education field. The teaching style that brings the best success I've found is centered on two points. First of all, it is based on listening, which means getting the student to talk. Eventually, with guidance, I aim to get them the ability to talk through and solve any problem. The second major technique I like to use is analogies. Even complicated subjects can be simplified into their core components which are easy to understand if taught as an analogy to something more familiar in daily life. A Little Bit About Me...

I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. I have 20+ years of real world business IT experience. Most of that was programming on IBM iSeries/AS400 mini computers in RPG or COBOL. The last 6 or 7 years has been devoted to learning HTML & PHP in my spare time. The languages aren't important, what is key is learning to break complex tasks down into smaller chunks and think logically about how to link all these smaller tasks into a program to accomplish the overall goal.
