When tutoring a student, I like to start with giving the student a few problems to see where their competency level lies. From there, I proceed like a teacher in a classroom would. I explain a problem while I am solving it step by step on a piece of paper. This allows the student to learn two separate ways-visually and orally. Once an idea is grasped, I like to give the student a couple of similar problems to solve on their own.
