My students often say I can’t be a teacher because they “just get it" when I explain. Even so, my degree is in math and I've taught professionally and privately. I have a history of maintaining high scores and would rather show why something works than how to follow steps. I don't expect students to love math or do it "my way" but I want students to know math isn't scary. To this end, I explain every step, do assessments to determine student needs and base instruction on student knowledge. I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift.
