More About This Tutor...

When I teach I want to engage the student or students. I want to grab their interest and keep it. This requires two main things of the teacher: he must know the subject well and he must have enthusiasm for the subject. This almost ensures that the student will enjoy being taught. I like an informal style, especially as classes get smaller.

Let me Guide Your Child

Having taught for more than five years as a certified teacher, I feel that I have what it takes to be an educator. Understanding the psyche of the student is of prime significance to me, which helps me in directing the teaching strategies and techniques. In order to let the student realize the significance of learning, I try to design a curriculum that is application based.
I prefer that the student understands the purpose behind learning. In order to achieve my goal, I spend quality time in talking and developing an effective communication platform. I avoid doing rote learning. Therefore I make the worksheets and lesson plan as application based as I can. Some techniques and strategies are also employed on occasions.

Positive results, creating confidence in your skills.

My teaching style is instructional but with student interaction. I wait for the student to resolve the problem, which helps with their critical thinking. Teaching is broken down into steps, whereby it is easier for me to identify where the problems exist within the subject matter and material. I then teach from the step where the problems arise and expand on that.
I have taught school at the high school level for two years in the U.S. Peace Corps. My wife and I have 6 children who we tutor every night once home from school. They are all very bright children that do very well in their school work. I volunteer at the YMCA and coach and teach children about sports and skills which improve the physicality of the student. I have tutored other students of friends that have furthered their skills and performance in and out of the classroom.

A Little Bit About Me...

Due to my background in early childhood, I teach using hands-on manipulative based strategies.
Before I began my professional teaching career, I worked for the Read Across America program helping young learners gain an appreciation for reading. I mentored elementary students who were labeled at risk due to low performance in reading. In 2001, I began teaching pre-k in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 2005, I relocated to Houston and began teaching kindergarten in Ft. Bend ISD. I taught 4th grade Math and Science for 2 years. Currently, I work as a 2nd grade ESL inclusion teacher. I have experience teaching students identified under the special education umbrella- autistic, asperger's Syndrome, and various developmental delays. More About This Tutor...

I began tutoring people when I was in the eigth grade. I decided I wanted to help out at the school across the street from my middle school in Colorado. I enrolled in a class that allowed us to go and assist the teachers and help the students. I fell in love with kids then for sure. I already knew I liked them because I started babysitting when I was 11 and couldn't stop! Then in ninth grade, a neighbor failed kindergarten and asked if I would starting coming over several days a week to help him understand what was being taught. Needless to say, he made it to the first grade! I now have a 17 year old sister who is constantly asking for my assistance in her homework and it is with great pleasure that I assist her.
I have a background in Psychology, so I am extremely intuitive with what a person needs regarding their learning style. I am able to adapt my teaching style to their needs ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style conforms to the learning style of the individual. Since no two people learn the same it is impossible to tutor the same way. I feel that once I have found a way to spark their interest and how they learn, it is much easier to help them acheive their goals and grasp the material. Many times the main goal is to teach the student how to learn, as many do not understand that function. Once they understand how they learn it becomes fun and easy.
As a late bloomer to my education, I understand the importance of completeing an education at the earliest time. I currently hold a BS degree in business with an emphasis on international markets. I enjoy helping people to learn. Aside from knowledge base expertise, certain qualities exemplify a good tutor: patience and being a good listener. Understanding a student’s learning strategies is foundational and incorporates good listening qualities. A desirable outcome will then be more achievable for the student. I try to let my student, regardless of age/grade, not feel intimidated or unintelligent regarding a certain subject or problem. This subsequently allows him or her to open up and feel comfortable as we work together to solve the problem. I encourage students to focus and have a positive attitude. Hopefully, developing good, solid study habits will result, not only while being tutored, but thereafter at home and school.

I currently work as a professional science/health writer, and I have a keen grasp of literature comprehension, grammar, and composition. I have tutored students in English, math, and science. Additionally, I have volunteered as a soccer coach, Sunday school teacher, and "Hands-On Science" instructor in the classroom. I previously taught private swimming lessons and piano lessons for children.
I believe the key to academic success is ensuring the student feels a sense of accomplishment and pride in self. My method of teaching focuses on determining the best learning style and beginning with lessons that will bring about success, and then challenging the student gradually. I try to make learning fun, while encouraging questions and an "out-of-the-box" approach to problem solving. The ultimate goal is to develop an independent and motivated learner.

The most important thing I've learned over the last 10 years is that children do not all learn the same way. For some children I need to think outside the box and come up with a creative way of explaining a concept in order for the child to understand. I want children to experience academic success and will take the time to patiently explain concepts that may be particularly difficult. I believe that with the appropriate environment and learning experiences all children can succeed academically.
Throughout college and graduate school I've always driven myself to be at the top of my class. I have earned a bachelors, MS, and PhD in Psychology, which has not only helped develop my interpersonal skills, but has also made me well versed in grammar and writing research papers not only for class, but for publication in scientific journals as well. In the last eight years I have tutor ... read more
