My comments on tutoring Algebra : Expert - have done PhD level work in mathematics

My teaching style is based loosely on that of my major college math professer (and head of the department), which was originated at the University of Texas by his thesis advisor and another colleague. It is basically the Socratic method as applied to teaching mathematics, to try to draw the student out and get him or her to think on their own. My comments on tutoring Algebra : I have experience using basic Algebraic principles for over 15 years in my education. I am skilled in mathematics, having been placed in excelled courses during middle school and high school. I completed math up to Calculus II in undergraduate coursework, and have taken more than 30 hours of statistical coursework in graduate school. Statistics use a TON of math :)

My teaching style is VERY approachable. I like to break down elaborate concepts and apply them directly to everyday occurrences as much as possible. For example, when I would teach middle school students math such as fractions and percentages, I would relate these to money so as not complicate understanding. I also use every day occurrences to explain statistics. For example, if I'm interested in why people decide to buy a car (outcome), I'm interested in miles per gallon of gas, crash safety, and tire tread (independent variables). I would use a linear regression to determine the variable that has the most significant affect on predicting the outcome.

My comments on tutoring Algebra : I have my bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering so complicated math is my favorite. I love to teach it and share my tricks of solving with students. I have taught and tutored High school and college math for the past 3 years! I have helped many students earn higher grades and gain a better understanding.

First, I like to determine a student's learning styles. Not all student learn the same. There are visual learners who learn by looking and writing. There are tactile learners who learn by doing and moving around (hands-on activities), then there are auditory learners who learn from hearing the information. I accommodate all styles int he classroom, but when tutoring, I assess the child by doing a learning style inventory which allows me to determine what style that particular child has. For visual learners, we use the basic paper and pencils, they watch me work. I model problem solving for them and then monitor them.
