I am new to tutoring, but not to teaching. In college, whether I was studying differential equations or the intricacies of cellular processes, I took the time to support my classmates and explain difficult concepts. I received my education K through high school in Finland, and continued with university- and graduate-level studies in Sweden. The emphasis was on life sciences with molecular neurobiology as the deepening theme. During this time, I tutored students in high school and college math. I also regularly thought medical students their biochemical laboratory courses. Tutoring is fundamentally different than lecturing because one interacts with one students. Therefore a tutor must adopt a style that most effectively communicates with the student. It is important to understand why the student is having difficulty mastering the subject. Most often I use an interlocution with the student. Ask a lot of challenging questions at the student’s level of understanding. Be sure not to let them frustrate themselves trying to find an answer. Manage time well.
