A Little Bit About Me...

In graduate school, I developed a management style, Egalitarian Leadership. The faculty encouraged me to submit my paper to Harvard Business School. Currently, I am writing a middle school age novel. Prior to this, I wrote a newspaper column for two years in California. I also score state proficiency tests for Pearson Educational Measurement, K-12.
It is my experience that an instructor delivers more learning when a student has an interest in the subject. "Inspire rather than require," has far greater efficacy in delivering information. I tend to make it fun, interesting and encourage student participation and feedback. Reward, a basic human desire, engenders craving for learning. Interactive--listening to and learning from student to determine "where they're at". Then, posing questions to enable them to find their own beginning/solution/answers. If session doesn't find a promising beginning, start from a base and progress with them. Interaction prevents or indicates "going too fast" or overwhelming them--"the eyes" are engaged or indicate "shut-down". Making the math or education "mean something" provides a reason for learning or further developing the concepts. Encouragement and sincere compliments are very important. Sharing your own struggles or an "ah-huh" moment helps ease the role differences toward a comfortable, encouraging, learning relationship.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science with a minor in Accounting. I graduated from the University of Houston with a 3.8 G.P.A. in my major. I have learned to apply critical thinking via my education throughout my previous career in the hotel industry. I was a member of Toast Masters for a year and learned valuable communication skills and the ability to speak with precision and confidence. I have coached youth soccer for approximately 6 years and currently am the Full Field Program director (a volunteer position) for Harbor Soccer Club in Gig Harbor.
