My comments on tutoring Calculus I : I received a score of 4 in the AP Calculus test

I Graduated from Killeen High School in 2014 with a G.P.A. of 3.9 with a class rank of 7 out of over 400 students. I have received a score of 3 in the AP World History, U.S. History, and Government and received a score of 4 in the subjects of English IV, Economics, Computer Science, and Calculus. I Recently finished my first year of college at Our Lady of the Lake University, which is a Catholic liberal arts Institution. My comments on tutoring Calculus I : I struggled through the first few weeks of calculus. It was one of the most difficult courses I took in college. I had to revamp my entire method of studying. I went to group tutoring and did more homework problems then was assigned, and I ended up doing rather well. I understand the daunting nature of the complex problems that calculus presents.

I always liked playing up my quirky personality. My favorite teachers and professors were the goofy ones, the ones who can relate to the students' fun side. These teachers also challenged me the most, and I ended up getting so much more out of the course. I figure that, if a student likes the teacher, he or she will pay more attention and have a deeper respect for the teacher. The teacher then can use this trust to push the student a little more, intellectually. I find that is what works best for me.
I don't any paid, professional tutoring experience. However, I have volunteered my services to family members and friends. During my sophomore year, I took Organic Chemistry and excelled. I worked in industry with computers the first 20 years of my career in Caracas, Venezuela. I worked the next 27 years in education as faculty at Brigham Young University and upon retirement at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. At both places I was teaching computer programming and design and at Del Mar Web design and implementaion. As a engineer I have been training operators in everything form SPC to troubleshooting for 30 years. I am a volunteer tutor for Adult ESL & GED for the Literacy Council of Williamson County since June 2009.
I have worked with adults. I prefer a one on one direct instruction and mentoring, keeping everything simple and fun. I am not sure how well I would be with children; I have none of my own and have not spent much time with my nephews and nieces. My goal when working with students is to fully describe the steps necessary to solving various classes of problems, often in an outline form, for it is in learning these steps that a student becomes an independent learner. I like to work through as many examples as the student needs, gradually working them into the problem-solving process, until they are able to work a few completely on their own, or, in some way, demonstrate understanding of the material. Of course, this method is a little easier to employ in one on one tutoring sessions, but even with my work in the classroom, I feel student participation is crucial to the learning environment.
