I will ask a student some questions to find out what they know about the subject. I listen carefully for clues to potential obstacles the student is facing. How the student feels about the subject is affected by perception of difficulty and personal ability, and by perception of importance. I want the student to gain a sense of accomplishment as early as possible in order to establish self-motivation. I work to establish in the student a base of knowledge or experience, and I teach the student how to use that as a springboard for learning further material and solving puzzles or resolving questions. Keeping the student aware of the larger context for the material is a constant habit as well.

Throughout my studies at a liberal arts College I gained a great diversity of knowledge and skills in many different subject areas. During my second year as a Religious Studies major, I began tutoring both native and ESL college students in Philosophy, theology, and a number of upper-level religious studies courses, many of which were writing-intensive. I student taught in a fourth grade classroom this past semester. The classroom consisted of 29 students. I taught all subjects and incorporated many hands on experiences with each subject. I have taught second, third, fourth, and sixth grades. I was a camp counselor for five summers. During this experience I lead a cabin of females for a week at a time. I will be living in Champaign, IL starting this August.
