First teaching job was in a school for severely autistic children. After being there for a year I taught in a residential home for boys. This was challenging but probably one of my favorite jobs as a teacher. Because of the distance from home to work (about 1-1/2 hrs.), I applied at an urban school 20 minutes from my home. My first job there was managing the Young Parents Program. This was a program for high school girls who were pregnant or had already had a child. This program allowed the young girls to attend school. Due to budget restrictions it was cut. I was offered a position as a special education teacher in the high school. While at Vassar during my senior year, I was employed by the music department as the music history intern. In this position, I was expected to instruct students enrolled in the current music history course once a week in new material as dictated by the professor. In order to prepare for this, I met with the professor prior, but often I was given freedom to design the lesson on my own. I also completed a correlate sequence in medieval/Renaissance studies, and took an array of history, art history, religion, gender studies, and English classes in addition to my required music courses.
