My teaching is relational and student centered. I motivate by affirmation and encouragement. I beleive it is important to listen to students and pay attention to their strenghts, fears, hopes, and passions.
I taught 7th grade English for one year and 5th grade general education for three years. Prior to teaching, I tutored writing and study skills in our university acedemic skills department. I have also tutuored adults learning English as a second language and adults learning to read. Additionally, I have worked at after school programs, homeschooled a student who could not attend school for 3 months because of a brain injury, and volunteered as a reading partner for an elementary school student for three years. My most previous work experience has been as a pastor of two rurual congregations in Iowa. My family has recently relocated to Richland Center, WI.

I have sons ages 17 and 20, and continually took an active role in fostering their education. From the time they first set foot in kindergarten, through high school, I regularly volunteered, supporting their and the schools’ needs. I am a graduate of Brigham Young University with a BA in English. Psychology and child development were part of my curriculum. When our children were all in school, I started substitute teaching K-12. I especially enjoyed working with K-5. I have worked as a substitute, permanent substitute and teaching assistant for about 13 years in the Concord School District (NH) and the Provo School District (UT). Some assignments were a few months long while teachers were recovering from surgery or illness. I had the opportunity to attend seminars on "Autism" and "Image Writing".
