In the mid-to-late 1980s I led workshops and served as a chaperone for U.S. and international foreign exchange program students aged 16-19 under the auspices of American Field Services (AFS). Then in the late 1980s and mid-1990s, I taught the basic speech course (public speaking) at several urban/suburban college and university settings (DePaul University, Loyola University, College of DuPage, Harper College), in addition to storytelling classes at two non-traditional adult learning centers in Chicago. If I had to pick one style it would be direct teaching. Although being a special education teacher I also use the cognitive strategy instruction. This approach is very helpful as a tool to help students develop the necessary skills to be self-regulated learners. One should continually differentiate the lesson utilizing all the modalities. When I facilitate interaction between the class it will depend on the lesson sometimes having the whole class participate is the way to go, other times it is helpful to employ small groups.
