A Little Bit About Me...

Children are our heritage. Children have an innate desire to learn and I believe that with proper guidance, each child can be successful. I endeavor to determine what the child is interested in learning and build from there. Education is a very high priority in our family and we encourage others to further their education, whether it involves college or study on one's own, in order to better themselves.
I began homeschooling my children in 1993. My older son was in 8th grade, my younger son was in 4th grade, my oldest daughter was in Kindergarten, and my twin daughters were 2 years old. My older son graduated with 2 bachelor degrees after spending a year in France as an English teacher in a high school. My younger son graduated with a double degree and a minor. I have experience in every level of student. My first degree (A.S.) was in Engineering and I worked at higher level math, including a college Teacher's Assistant in Calculus. I went on to obtain a B.S. in Education. I took the coursework for Middle and High School endorsements in 4 other subject areas. I work in Remedial Education at a local university currently.
I have always believed everyone can learn and everyone has different learning styles. Finding what works for the student is often the key to life-long success. My success in tutoring was more visible to me at ITT in the period between 1995 to 2006. I got to know the student's problems with the subject matter and was able to help them more accurately than in the classroom. I was very pleased with the results of this process. The course involved statistics, math, physics, calculus.
Presently retired. 25 years of teaching locally at Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne and at ITT in Fort Wayne. Other localities include Idaho, Arizona, and South Carolina. 20 years as an engineer on Government Projects including the Minuteman Missile, Loss of Fluid Test reactor, Roland Missile Project, Parts of the Lunar Excursion Module etc.

My teaching style is to provide several ways to solve a problem. Since learning is done in different ways, one of the solution methods will turn on a light bulb and the student will "get it". I bring additional materials and new ways to remember. Last fall I tutored a fifth grader in mathematics. I provided note cards for him in the various solution formulas.
At Purdue University I took all Engineering degree mathematics courses. In addition, I took five statistical cources, three of them were graduate level. At AlliedSignal, I received a week's training to teach three day courses in Total Quality Leadership to employees. Over the course of one year, I conducted twenty four courses with a partner facilitator. One company I worked for was a supplier to Caterpillar. In the course of mutual problem solving, I was able to be certified as a Green Belt.

My teaching style is one of friendly leadership. Working through problems or lessons with the student by leading them through it, then working it with them side by side while explaining the details helps them achieve the accomplishment of learning without making them feel as if they were just instructed how to do it. Helping a student learn is more than just teaching them a lesson in math, science, or English; it’s about being someone that they can look up to as a role model, being someone that they can learn from in more than just an academic manner, and being someone who is there for them when they need something.
