I used to hate math, now I love it.

i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.
I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections.
I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.

I have taught mathematics at the high school and college levels spanning over 15 years. I have always been complimented on being able to explain difficult topics in plain straight-forward language. My primary profession is an actuary, bit I also tutor students in calculus and statistics during my spare time. I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time.
