I have always wanted to be a teacher. I began tutoring while I was still in high school. I earned my BS in Elementary Education in 1980. I have tutored students of all ages in different subjects. Most of my tutoring experience has been in math and reading. I have tutored students for all sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. I have been a homebound and home-school teacher, as well as a classroom teacher.
I love to help children learn! It is so rewarding to see the reaction of a child who suddenly understands what he has been trying to learn. As both a teacher and a counselor I have worked to develop a teaching style that is student focused. For many years, education has been one of my top priorities. I graduated salutatorian of my high school class and summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences. In high school, I tutored in a local elementary school, focusing on developing students' grammar and composition skills. While in college, I tutored chemistry, biology, physics and math courses up to graduate levels.
While tutoring at my college, I received specialized training on identifying and adjusting to different learning styles. I use this knowledge to tailor each session to the needs of the individual student. In school I took a class that taught us that everyone learns in a different way. Just like how everyone sees things from different perspectives. After taking that class I realized that there is not just one way to teach or learn. I feel learning should be educational but fun. Repetition is also important. These aspects should all be combined in order to successfully help children learn. I am friendly, easy going, and like to have a good time. Learning does not have to be a chore but can be an exciting experience that a child can enjoy and appreciate. I worry that children think learning is boring and not worth their effort.
