As a special education teacher of six years I am fully aware of the multitude of learning styles that our students come to us with. As a teacher it is our responsibility to tap into their strenghts to bring about a thoughtful learning experience. In addition to recognizing strenghts, I am able to remediate areas of low acheivement, or when the case may be, circumvent the disability area so that the student can access the curriculum. I find that many of the problems that students have with mathematics are not a result of an inability to understand the subject, but an inability to grasp the material as presented by the teacher, and a resulting disinterest. I like to spend the first couple of meetings with the student assessing how they learn best and giving them some tricks that lead to success in an area that has given them a lot of trouble. Through their success, we can build interest in the subject, and through understanding their learning patterns, we can present the material in a way that makes sense to them. The result of this method is that the subject becomes easier for the student to understand, and the applications make it more interesting to the student.
