After graduating college I taught elementary K-8th grade in NYC. I taught for one year and decided to live Paris, France teaching English. I lived in Paris, France for 1.5 years then moved to Rome, Italy, again teaching English. My experiences were wonderful as I met people who really enjoyed learning English and needed it for work. After 6 months I returned to the states and taught at a Junior High School on the Lower eastside of NYC. I left teaching after 10 years to market computers. My skills as an educator served me well and I did extremely well. After approximately 8 years I decided I wanted to go back to teaching, and have been teaching the use of computers. Because I enjoy and see the wonder in science and I like to show that to students. If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expand their horizons, then they will be more open to learning. A common problem with individuals needing tutoring is that they sometimes do not think they have the "smarts" to learn the subject. My first objective is to show them they have the "stuff" to get it! Then I show them how it can be fun. This needs to be balanced with the practical need to get passing grades and complete the course work. I have spent my whole adullt life tutoring, mentoring and being a role model to others by being involved as a coach for the local Pop Warner football team, as well as serving as a tutor to three middle school/high school students, in the subject of math, science and social studies. I have also served as a substitute teacher. My favorite subject areas are in American History, Government, and Science.
I do not believe in standardized testing. Each child has the capability of learning, but not all children have the ability to take tests, for whatever reason. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.
