I love the give and take of working with high school students. I relish hearing fresh, young opinions and seeing how they decide what they believe in and why. My style entails showing a student the relevance of what he or she is doing. It is important for a child to know WHY what they are supposed to be learning is so important; they need to know how it will help them years from now after the classes are over. My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. After graduating from the University of Miami, I taught Kindergarten, a 3rd/4th grade combination, 6th grade, and computers/technology. After having children, I transitioned to tutoring students, some with special needs including, dyslexia, auditory processing, traumatic brain injury, ADHD, and others.
