During my year as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Earth Ethics Institute, a non-profit organization at Miami Dade College, I was responsible for the successful execution of five high-profile programs. I strengthened my ability to multitask and was able to effectively implement each program’s components at their full potential and capabilities. I became accustomed to working independently under strict deadlines and overseeing many service-learning college students who assisted with events. As many of these service-learners regarded me as a role-model, I committed myself to bringing out their full potentials while mentoring them through their college experiences. I was considered the unofficial technological assistant of my workplace due to my proficiency at Microsoft Office and my ability to work at an exceedingly fast pace. In addition to this, my co-workers often request that I overview ... read more

My comments on tutoring Marine Biology : Was a Marine Biology minor in college. I also worked for over a year and half as a Marine Mammal Biologist.

I obtained a B.S. in Biology, with a concentration in aquatic science, from Wittenberg University in 2006. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored elementary students in math and science twice a week for two years. After college, I moved into the marine science profession. In August of 2008, I started teaching High School Biology I, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science to students in Polk County. In addition, after school hours were spent with two students taking AP Biology classes. Both students achieved a 4 or higher on their placement exams. My tutored students reported an increase in their ability to record class notes, study, and take tests. My previous tutoring experiences have included subjects such as; elementary science, elementary math, Algebra (I & II), Geometry, Pre- Calculus, Anatomy, Physiology, Biology (both College and HS level), HS Chemistry, basic w ... read more

I was the valedictorian of my graduating high school class and one of the top high school math and science students in the nation, but I was not always a stellar student. For instance, I received a “D” in math in the second grade. I attribute my transformation to an "A" student at least partially to my third grade teacher in whose class my math grades improved dramatically and I jumped from the lowest to the highest reading group. She helped boost my confidence, made me feel like I could actually do better, and made me excited about learning. My tutoring reflects my strong belief that achieving some or all of the latter can positively impact students' long-term learning.
I am just as comfortable tutoring students in math and science as in reading and writing. As a secondary school student, I received a number of top science honors, such as first place honors in several state scienc ... read more

In 2001 I graduated from Coastal Carolina University with two bachelor degrees, BS in Marine Science and BS in Environmental Science. Both of these degrees required extensive studies in both math and science. While in college I tutored fellow students in science, math and English. I also was a teacher/tutor for two home schooled students in the 2005-2006 school year.

Assisting students with their study has been the most rewarding experience, which I hope to continue. I first teach the students how to study so that they are able to fully understand the material, grasp it, and be able to apply it, and not have to memorize purely for that purpose. I have been able to apply a few simple steps with the students which have proven effective and help in any subject. I love working with children and see that every child has the potential to be successful when they are instructed properly.
I have earned a bachelors degree in Business Administration as well as a masters in Finance. This education not only allowed me to gain the knowledge but learn to apply it. I am able to tutor not only in the sciences but also the arts. Throughout my volunteer experience in helping students of all ages with their study, I have learned to instruct students how to s ... read more

My style of teaching varies from each student that I have ever had the joy of tutoring. I take my own studying skills which involve both visual and hands-on approaches and see how well it is a fit for the person I am tutoring. I know that sometimes it takes a lot of patience to grasp certain concepts or ideas, and that is a virtue that I possess. I do make the learning experience a fun one by relating it to every day life and creating activities that relay the information that is important to the student.
I have always had a passion for education whether it be while obtaining my degrees, or helping out other students with their studies. As a psychologist I understand what it takes to transfer information and get it to "stick" in our central nervous system (brain). After understanding some things about the person I would be tutoring I would then develop a plan to present information to them (in a multimodal manner)that would easily associate with their particular "past environment." The material would be usually presented in a highly visual manner augmented with auditory and some hands-on instruction.
I instructed middle school and high school students for over 12 years before I became certified as a school psychologist in 1998. I have subsequently instructed at the college level since 1998 in the areas of psychology and teacher education. I am a tenured Full Professor. I also continue to complete psychological evaluations for our college's students through our Student Disabilities Service Office.

I currently teach Biology, which can be a diffucult subject for students to learn. I try to tie real world applications into every Biology topic possible. Students always tend to comprehend and understand Biology material when teachers can relate the applications to real life.
Inspring and mentoring students is a very fufilling career for me. Teaching has always been one of life's goals every since my high school Biology teacher made a major impact in my life. After graduating from Jackson State University in 2006, I moved to Ocala, Florida to start my teaching career. Teaching high school students can sometimes be a very challening position but I would not change my teaching career for anything in the world.

Teaching is one of the greatest gifts to give a child at any age. I have been given a great opportunity to teach many children a different grade levels.
