I believe in interactive teaching, where the student is as involved as the teacher. My satisfaction comes from watching students discover knowledge that they had previously thought unavailable. Every student can learn, and my purpose and goal is to help each student stretch as far as he or she is willing to go. I have completed all requirements for a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught mathematics, computer applications, life skills, and other subjects at high school and community college levels in Colorado. I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. I am patient and encouraging with students. I work hard to find ways to present a subject so that each learner will find it interesting. I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. All learning starts with a question, both by teacher and student alike. My role is both as teacher (coach and guide) and student (questioner). I should employ a variety of questioning techniques to better understand strengths and weaknesses, then prescribe remedies tailored for individual strengths and weaknesses, facilitating the learning process and desired outcome. Most people know intuitively how they learn, as well as which modalities work best for them. Paying attention, listening, probing with questions, observing responses, being patient is the first part of my job. Often times the student knows what works best and can even tell you. So I just need to pay attention. Once the diagnosis is evident then I can prescribe, or at least give suggestions that help facilitate the desired outcome.
