I am very happy to repeat myself or go over other examples to help the student understand the concept. I also like to emphasize concept over memorization. Of course, math has a good amount of memorization, and yes, it is important; however, I believe that learning concept is more useful than sheer memorization, and understanding a concept is better than memorizing formulas and properties.

My comments on tutoring Geometry : As a tutor in the college-prep after-school program Upward Bound,I helped students with Geometry problems for 7 years, and know where students tend to stumble.

I taught college-level Plant Science for 14 years. I spent 7 years as a tutor of Math and Science at the college-prep after-school program Upward bound, helping students with homework and preparing them for the ACT and the SAT. I am currently employed as a Math tutor at a local technical college where I help students with Basic Math, Intro Algebra,Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Trig and Elementary Statistics.
I start by giving a diagnostic test to assess each student's proficiency in the basics of Arithmetic and Algebra: fractions, decimals, percentages and the interconversion between them,and the rules of working with signed numbers. This approach stems from the notion that without these basics, Math is an uphill climb for most students. I place more emphasis on full work than answers.
