My comments on tutoring Genetics : Within the scope of general biology courses I have taught sections on genetics. I also have worked in genetic research labs.

The defining characteristic of my teaching method, whether in a classroom or tutoring individual students, is fostering a respectful and comfortable learning environment. I believe that the foundation for this environment is created by establishing small, personal connections with the student. I try to take every opportunity to get to know a student’s’ personal interests. This allows me to choose meaningful examples and metaphors that students will be more likely to understand and remember. A Little Bit About Me...

I typically begin with the homework assigned by the students teacher, as theses are most often the questions that appear on the tests. Reviewing the practice tests, if available, is also key, as many teachers use only slightly modified versions for the real test. For more advanced students, or those wishing to earn the highest marks, I will design extra problems, both conceptual and mathematic based, to continue to challenge them. This can include something a simple as more problems to work on, or as complex as having the student re-write previous problems to give them a chance to see all the different angles that the concept can be tested.

I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively. I usually achieve this by showing them how to do a problem, doing a problem or two with them, and then having them do problems on their own, only assisting when they need it.
I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas. I also see how to apply what I have learned to original problems because I see connections and hold a deeper understanding of the material. A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a B.S. degree in Genetics from Iowa State University, with a minor in statistics, enabling me to gain an in depth understanding of science and mathematics. I was a very driven student, every semester I excelled in a full 18 credit hours, while working in a genetics research lab and being actively involved in many clubs, as well as collegiate athletics tutoring. After the completion of my Bachelor's degree, I accepted a research position at a National Research Institute. During my time in Chicago, I began tutoring high school students in the areas of Chemistry, Biology and Geometry. I have since earned a Master's Degree in Molecular Entomology from Kansas State Univ.
