My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have taught students about poetry, plays and short stories for 20 years. I am patient and understanding. I am a poet myself!

In my experience, the majority of students are highly motivated. This is, for me, the key to success. However, very often, students require assistance with a wide range of ‘remediation’ in many of life’s basic competencies: a skill set that includes such issues as time management, test taking, study habits, and, sometimes, acculturation. My teaching methodology follows these simple steps: Step 1: Motivation Step 2: Definition & Understanding of terms Step 3: Explanation, exploration, discussion, debate Step 4: Questions & Answers Step 5: Practice: Time & Effort Step 6: Demonstration (or proof) I absolutely believe that motivation is required for learning. I have found that students become more motivated to learn when they understand how they will profit from the experience. I teach ‘communication’ all the time, regardless of the subject matter. My comments on tutoring Poetry : Certified in NJ

I have taught and/or tutored all the languages I have rated myself as an expert since 1952, and am still doing it presently, concentrating on remedial tutoring. I am also certified to teach Spanish; even though the system does not allow me to show more that three subjects, I am an expert in and as a native speaker of the language, I consider myself more than qualified to teach the language.

Reading is the Key to Success!

I have worked in the field of education as a teacher for 30 years. I have taught basic skills in foundations of Reading to middle school students. I have also taught all subject areas to elementary school children. The most memorable and most valuable experience in my career was teaching first graders how to read. It takes a trained professional to be able to lay out the framework children need to learn how to read. Reading skills on the first grade level are the most rudimentary and applicable to all grade levels there after.
My teaching style is flexible. I create a lesson plan that is individualized and benficial to that of the student I am tutoring. I adapt and adjust the curriculum to what is of primary importance to my student.

More About This Tutor...

For a little more than 13 years, I have been teaching numerous topics, most specifically writing, in which I hold a Master's degree. I find it riveting to guide learners to an enhanced appreciation for the rewards of communication and have grown to feel even more enamored with subject matters through encouraging students' curiosity.
I am Jesuit-schooled (undergraduate degree from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia), so I am very much into asking questions and analyzing concepts in depth.

Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I have over 19 years experiences teaching in Drexel University's First Year Writing Program. My experience includes teaching online, face-to-face, and hybrid classes ( partially face-to-face and partially online). For the past 5 years I have also taught ESL sections of First Year Writing. In addition I ma a tutor for the University Writing Center, a position I've also held for 10 years.
My teaching philosophy is simple, help students write to the best of their ability, give them the tools to engage in critical thinking, and challenge them to write about what they are interested in. Writing is clearly a skill that crosses majors, and is a critical skill in the workplace. I pride myself in being able to get students to see that writing is not only a practical skill, but also a lifelong skill.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an English major at Haverford College, I was given the opportunity and training to turn my passion for reading and writing into a highly developed skill. The English Department at Haverford prides itself on its rigorous program, and I have had thorough exposure to many of the most important literary works in English written by both British and American authors. However, most important to my job as a tutor, I have worked extensively in workshops designed to teach us both to analyze and critique the work of our peers, and also to revise both the content and presentation of our own writing. I strongly believe in the importance of grasping not only the concepts contained in a given text, but also of taking ownership over the reading experience. I hope to impart some of the skills and knowledge I have gained studying literature to students. I believe that my experience gives me both the pr ... read more

I have been in the education field for over 10 years. During that time I have tutored the verbal portion of the SATS, taught study skills, and reading. I also was an environmental education teacher at the Schuylkill Center for the Environment and volunteered in wildlife rehabilitation.
