Learning Solutions at Tampa Day School

All of our staff members are highly qualified with over 100 hours of training and observations. Our staff develops a specific intervention plan during an initial session with the child. A detailed lesson plan is developed weekly to encompass each student’s strengths and weakness as they progress through the programs. The staff continuously updates and/or revises student goals as the student either masters a particular area or shows difficulty. Each staff member keeps a detailed log on each component of the program that is covered in a particular session. The session notes include the academic performance of each new task. During a weekly meeting, the staff will review each student’s progress for the week and plan additional goals.

Recent College Grad, Working on Becoming a Certified Teacher

Creative, kind, patient
Recent college graduate with school-aged nephews whom I help with school work, one of my nephews has ADHD. Took all honors classes in school, including multiple AP classes (AP Biology, AP Environmental, and AP Literature). In college I majored in both Criminology and Psychology, so I have a lot of expertise there. I have never received below a 93% on a paper (including my time spent at FSU, in which I wrote A LOT of papers)

"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.

Reading is one of my top subjects!

I am a recent graduate, having majored in biology and environmental studies. During my time in college I also had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for a genetics lab and took part in an environmental education program in New Hampshire. My science and liberal arts background makes the the ideal candidate to teach a variety of subjects in ways that are interesting and informative to students.
Relaxed, informal- students each learn in their own way, my objective is to learn from about an individual and cater to their own educational needs.

My comments on tutoring Reading : Extensive experience and training in Reading instruction for grades 6-adult, both in and out of classrooms.

After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I taught (and tutored after school) until I moved to Florida in 2009, when my spouse began graduate studies at U.S.F. Since then, I have continued to tutor a wide range of students in subjects ranging from high school Latin, 5th grade Math, college English, S.A.T. and G.E.D. Preparation, and graduate level writing, and I have extensive training and experience with students who struggle with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and ESL issues, as well as with children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
I believe that all students can and will achieve ... read more

All-subject ACT/SAT/GRE/LSAT tutoring! Law and economics too

I bring a friendly and patient approach to tutoring. I know hiring a tutor can be a challenging process and a tough decision to make. Accordingly, I promise to make the lessons as enjoyable as possible, while ensuring you (or your child) truly understand the material. I owe it to my students to make the material fun and interesting.
I have over 5000 hours (nearly 10 years) of tutoring experience, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT and other selected subjects. I have been helping high school and college students get accepted to undergraduate and graduate programs all over the United States, including UF, Michigan, Stanford, FSU, UCF, and many others. My first teaching experience was with the Department of Juvenile Justice when I was fresh out of college. It was, believe it or not, a lot of fun! When I went on to Law School I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Teac ... read more

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember.I do and I get it.

I believe that implementing the right tools, along with clearly stating what the student needs to learn, along with discussion, will ensure student success.Using multisensory resources, creatively using the newly formed knowledge, along with pre-testing will foster memory and recall.
The experience I have gained while studying Education and Psychology, along with administrating exams for Wonderlic Scholoastic Testing and tutoring has enabled me to learn through understanding, hard work and dedication. I have learned through extensive courses in Psychology on how we learn, education courses that break learning down, and working with children and adolescence for over ten years with tutoring and patience, that with the proper tools and guidance, anything can be achieved.

My comments on tutoring Reading : Is my best subject and I teach it phonetically. I believe that sounding out the words is the easiest way for comprehension. Certain rules must be applied though for words that sound the same.

In my tutoring sessions I spend time getting to know my student discovering his weaknesses, his strengths and evaluating his abilities to learn, and to comprehend. Then I devise a plan of action to help him overcome areas of fear and insecurity by helping him to build confidence and right attitudes towards learning. I then proceed to teach him good listening skills for comprehension with positive encouragement for new adventure. As my student becomes more confident, I then begin to work on his areas of weakness he has in learning to rise him up to a new level of expression. I believe that a student who is unable to control his emotions often has difficulties in learning so my goal is to instill confidence and conquer fear which frequently is the source of student learning problems.
