A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working at Hermitage High School in Henrico County as an English teacher for the past 4 years. I have taught 9th grade, but I have spent most of my time teaching 11th grade. I have taught a variety of "levels," from standard to college prep to honors. Every year I teach about 130 students. Last year, only 5 of my students didn't p ass the 11th grade SOL, and after re-takes the following week, only 1 didn't pass. I was trained to be a SAT tutor using the TCA program in the county. On any given morning, I will have 1-4 students in my room with me while I tutor them for the SATs.

I enjoy instructing others, especially through the use of analogies and personal stories. Growing up in a very different, rural environment often provides me with various examples and personal situations that are often pertinent to the subject at hand. In addition, I actively attempt to connect the subject material with non-academic subjects, such as musical interests or athletics, two areas which I also enjoy. I understand the concerns students have with being assisted by a tutor and attempt to make that process as fulfilling as it is necessary.
As a college graduate, I decided to pursue graduate studies in the field of Historical Archaeology and History. A recipient of a B.S. in Anthropology/History and a minor in Biology from Radford University, this new focus is a continuation of my concentrations from my undergraduate career. It is the only way to truly make the world a better place.

A Little Bit About Me...

Recognizing that each person has his/her own learning style, I emphasize "application" of material learned. I do this primarily by providing examples of information taught and require my students to do the same. My approach to teaching is to create a friendly environment with positive expectations to enhance the learning experience.
Having been devoted to the welfare of children and families and valuing education highly throughout my life, I find tutoring a satisfying occupation. After vounteering my services for many years, I attained formal degrees in education, psychology, and counseling, with very high GPAs. I am a patient, friendly, and fun individual. Like I tell my own children, I believe that teaching and learning is a two-way street. It's important for teachers to engage students, to help them discover, to guide them in their learning. There's a good deal of back-and-forth initially to determine a good learning program, and it takes con ... read more

My teaching experience includes: underwriting skills enhancement for professional insurance agents; tutoring for Sylvan of kindergarten-age students through high school seniors; and introducing the building blocks of reading skills and math skills to elementary age children. Learning can be interesting, fun, challenging and enriching. I find I can assist students by using my sense of humor; adapting to a student’s most effective way to learn (auditory, visual, contextual, etc.); and using my work experiences to help students make real world connections to abstract learning. I love seeing that flash in a student’s eyes because of something I did or said that allowed them to grasp the material we are studying.
