I love working with children and young adults. My challenge as a tutor is to take something that is difficult and make it fun and understandable. Too often students look at teachers or adults as enemies, and I try to take a very laid-back, conversational approach when tutoring. Meeting the student where they are at academically and striving to help them succeed in school is my teaching style. That might require stacking up 100 pennies to teach about percentages; drawing pictures or graphs to teach how to do words problems in math; or making up short stories using the phonics and reading skills I’m trying to teach.
