In order to move forward in an academic subject, let’s first see where the student is in their understanding of the subject. Perhaps the student's mind is filled with a patch-work of facts and concepts that, together, simply do not make sense. In such a case, the leap from basic memorization to higher-level thinking such as analysis and problem solving will be difficult. But rather than bore the student with things too basic, let's apply what they already know to the unknown.
