Math, Science & Microsoft Excel tutor

On-the-job math is almost always done using Microsoft Excel, so I can show you how to do almost anything on a spreadsheet. Ive been a TV broadcast engineer, and taught video production in a public high school. Ive been an avionics technician, a solar PV installer & designer, and a thermal analyst for solar buildings. I have taught and been certified in four states. Grades 7-9 is the level I prefer, though I have taught at the Junior College level also. History is my major, and having spent much of my youth on the European continent with my father's duty assignments, it is easy to teach the events that have led to the present situations. English and education were my minors, and they have become essential living in an area where more Spanish is spoken than our native tongue. Also the impact of "computer english"has destroyed in many the ability to communicate in a formal manner, with language and vocabulary necessary to achieve success outside the academic sphere.

My philosophy for effective education is comprised of six components creativity, character, culture, civic capacity, shared governance and student centeredness. I believe student centeredness is the trunk and the other components are the branches. Each component is connected to the other and they share common characteristics. For me teaching is about making the connection for students between the literature, writing, piece of art or media and their lives. I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. After graduating from High School I attended the University of Utah for 1 year. After that year I was drafted into the US Marine Corps and my education was put on hold as I served my country and raised a family. After all of my children graduated from college I returned to finish my studies.
