I have worked with the following populations throughout the many years of professional experience: mental health patients - (children & adults), special needs, developmentally disabled, people with learning disabilities, those with ADD/ADHD, Children, Adolescents, and Adults of varying ages and skill sets. Hearing Impaired is one of my top subjects! I have been a classroom teacher of deaf and hearing impaired children and teens for eight years. I am able to use sign language to communicate. I can also use cued speech and oral methods.

I have been a classroom teacher and a tutor for children, teens and adults who are deaf, hearing impaired, speech/language impaired, social/emotional impaired, cognitive delay, autistic, ADHD, etc. I have also taught early childhood children from birth. I can communicate using sign language and cued speech. I have experience teaching dyslexic children, teens and adults using the Orton-Gillingham philosophy. I am Pro-Literacy certified and I am a STAR certified trainer.

Learning needs to have importance to a student. They need to understand why they need to learn the things they are being taught. Then it makes more sense to them. If possible, teach to their strengths. If they like computers, find a website that gives them practice. If they are better writers than listeners, have them dictate and read it back to you. Flashcards work well for some while others have difficulty remembering things. It all depends on the strengths of that child as to what is the best way to teach.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a special needs teacher, I have worked with many students who simply needed someone to show them a different way to learn the material. Learning can be made so much easier when taught in a format that is fun. This makes it enjoyable and more likely to be remembered. In a tutoring one-on-one kind of setting, times tables could be taught with a deck of cards and using the two numbers thrown out as the problem. Reading and writing can be done by taking pictures and creating a story from the pictures you have taken. It costs the price of a throw away camera and the students love it. I bleieve learning must be fun.
